TODAY’s CHALLENGE: Mindful – Eat your meals mindfully. Slow Down.

Today, I am addressing a topic that you may or may not be familiar with – mindful eating.
You’re taking steps to make healthier choices with your diet, and are making sure you are getting adequate exercise each day. But are you practicing mindful eating?

You may be asking “What the heck is mindful eating?”

Have you ever had the experience of eating a good-sized meal, not paying much attention to it, and after finishing noticing that your belly felt full but your mouth was still hungry? That’s because the brain must experience taste, pleasure, aroma, and satisfaction so it can accurately assess a meal, digest it and metabolize it.
When we eat too fast or fail to notice our food, the brain interprets this missed experience as hunger.
If you think you have an overeating problem, 9 out of 10 chances, you don’t. Your problem is that you don’t EAT when you eat.
Simply put, the less awareness you bring to the table, the more you’ll need to eat and the greater your weight gain will be.

What’s amazing is that researchers have estimated that as much as 30-40 percent of the total digestive response to any meal is due to our full awareness of what we’re eating.
Digestion quite literally begins in the head as chemical and mechanical receptors on the tongue, mouth and nose are stimulated by smelling food, tasting it, chewing it, and noticing it.
The slower you eat the faster you metabolize.
Simply put, the less awareness you bring to the table, the more you’ll need to eat and the greater your weight gain will be.
Mindful eating can also help you enjoy your food more. Take the time to savor the various flavors and textures as you chew. Many times our hectic lives lead us to rush through a meal without ever taking the time to truly appreciate our food.
Adding mindful eating to your healthy lifestyle can be an excellent way to complement your existing habits. It can help you lose weight, aid in digestion, and help you to enjoy your food more than ever before. Give it a try and see how you feel.
Give your body and soul exactly what they want—an experience of eating that’s rich with awareness—and you’ll never need to fight yourself again.

  1. TODAY: Take some time to explore each of the following with your next meal and notice the difference:
    Sight: Look at your food
    Smell: Experience the smell
    Taste: What is the experience?
    Reaction: How is your body responding?
  2. GOING FORWARD: Mindful eating is easy to put into practice for the long term. Simply slow down, chew more, enjoy the food and company. All it takes is making sure that you are intentional with your food consumption.
